Bunions
A bunion is a progressive bone deformity involving the joint at the base of the big toe (the metatarsophalangeal joint). As the big toe shifts toward the second toe, the joint becomes enlarged and misaligned, leading to a visible bump along the side of the foot. This condition—known medically as hallux valgus or hallux abducto valgus—can cause significant pain, pressure, and difficulty walking.
At Knoxville Footcare, we offer conservative and surgical treatment options to relieve discomfort, improve foot function, and prevent further progression.
What We Offer
- Padding and shoe modifications to reduce friction and relieve pressure on the bunion
- Corn and callus care caused by shoe irritation or shifting weight
- Custom orthotics to support proper foot alignment and reduce strain on the joint
- Footwear recommendations for supportive, roomy shoes that reduce pain and rubbing
- Joint mobility exercises to reduce stiffness and improve foot mechanics
- Night splints (often for adolescents) to slow progression during bone growth
- Bunion surgery (bunionectomy) when conservative care isn’t enough to relieve pain or restore function
When to Schedule a Visit
If you experience any of the following, it may be time to have your bunion evaluated:
- Pain or swelling near the base of your big toe
- Difficulty fitting shoes or walking comfortably
- Redness or tenderness from rubbing against footwear
- Changes in toe alignment or worsening deformity
- Skin thickening or development of calluses on the foot
Understanding the Cause
Bunions are often the result of poor foot mechanics—such as flat feet or overpronation—and may be worsened by wearing tight, narrow shoes. While not directly hereditary, they do tend to run in families due to shared foot structure. Bunions affect an estimated 33% of people in Western populations and often progress without treatment.
Long-Term Relief Starts Here
Because bunions are structural deformities, they won’t go away on their own. But with early care and expert guidance, we can help you avoid surgery, relieve symptoms, and improve function.
