Flat Feet
Flat feet are a common structural condition where the arches of the feet are low or absent. While this can be normal in infants and toddlers—especially before walking begins—most people develop an arch during early childhood. When arches remain low into adulthood, the condition may cause discomfort, poor foot mechanics, or contribute to other problems over time.
At Knoxville Footcare, we evaluate and treat flat feet in both children and adults, with a focus on pain relief, improved stability, and long-term foot health.
What We Offer
- Comprehensive foot exams to assess foot structure and arch function
- Gait analysis to detect abnormal motion or alignment issues
- Custom orthotics to provide arch support and reduce overpronation
- Supportive footwear guidance for proper cushioning and control
- Physical therapy and stretching plans to strengthen supporting muscles
- Bracing or taping for ankle stabilization if needed
- Surgical options for severe or progressive flatfoot not responding to conservative care
When to Schedule a Visit
While many people with flat feet have no symptoms, you should schedule a visit if you notice:
- Pain in the foot, ankle, heel, or lower leg (especially with activity)
- Loss of arch height or a foot that appears to collapse when standing
- Uneven wear on shoes, often leaning inward
- Swelling or fatigue in the feet after walking or standing
- Progressive changes in foot shape or balance
Painful Progressive Flatfoot
In adults, flat feet may lead to tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction (TPTD), also called adult-acquired flatfoot. This occurs when the tendon that supports the arch becomes inflamed, stretched, or torn. Left untreated, it can cause chronic pain, joint damage, and mobility loss.
Treatment options for TPTD include anti-inflammatory therapy, orthotics, bracing, and in some cases, surgery to repair the tendon or realign the foot structure.
